A suspicious package discovered outside Endeavor Health Evanston Hospital triggered a lockdown and bomb threat investigation Tuesday evening, prompting police to close the facility for nearly three hours before declaring the area safe.
Evanston police said officers closed the hospital around 5:30 p.m. after the package was spotted outside the building.
According to a police statement, the item had wires protruding from it, raising immediate concern among officers on scene. Authorities did not release additional details about who reported the package or its exact location outside the hospital.
Drone and Bomb Squad Called to Scene
Given the nature of the package, Evanston police brought in specialized resources to handle the situation safely. A drone was deployed to examine the item without putting officers in direct danger, allowing investigators to assess the package from a distance before deciding on next steps.
The Cook County Bomb Squad also responded to assist with the investigation. Their involvement underscored how seriously officials treated the discovery, even as the hospital and surrounding area remained under lockdown while the assessment continued.
Hospital staff and patients were kept secure inside during the closure, and the surrounding perimeter was restricted to essential personnel only. It remains unclear how many patients or staff members were affected by the temporary shutdown or whether any procedures or hospital operations were delayed as a result.
Area Reopens After Package Ruled Not a Threat
After a thorough examination, police determined the package did not pose a danger. The all clear was given, and the area around the hospital reopened around 8:10 p.m., bringing the lockdown to an end after roughly two and a half hours.
