Chicago heat index 100-105

Chicago Weather: Hot, Humid Stretch With Heat Index Near 105 Expected

Posted on July 24, 2026 by Greg Ford

After several days of unusually mild, low-humidity weather with temperatures only in the 70s, Chicago is about to swing back into summer heat.

Meteorologist Emily Wahls of FOX 32 Chicago says warmer conditions are moving in fast, with the weekend and early next week bringing a sharp jump in both temperature and humidity.

Tuesday and Wednesday felt more like early autumn than late July, with highs well below the seasonal average, which typically sits in the mid 80s this time of year. Overnight skies will stay partly to mostly cloudy, with some higher-level clouds drifting into the region.

Lows will dip into the upper 50s and low 60s, with the coolest readings expected away from the lakefront and closer to inland suburbs.

Friday looks mostly dry, according to the forecast, even though some computer models are picking up on a chance of rain moving toward the Chicago area. Dry air higher in the atmosphere is expected to keep most of that moisture from reaching the ground, so Friday should stay partly sunny with highs in the upper 70s to low 80s.

Hot and Humid Stretch Expected Through Monday

The real change arrives Saturday, when temperatures climb into the mid 80s under partly sunny skies.

Sunday and Monday will feel noticeably more oppressive, with highs forecast in the low 90s. When combined with rising humidity, heat index values could climb as high as 100 to 105 degrees, making it feel considerably hotter than the actual air temperature suggests.

Forecasters are also watching the potential for strong to severe thunderstorms developing across the region on Sunday and into Monday, so residents should keep an eye on updated alerts as the weekend approaches.

Tips for Staying Safe in the Heat

With heat index values expected to reach dangerous levels, health officials generally recommend staying hydrated, limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours, and checking on elderly neighbors or those without reliable air conditioning.

Pets should also be kept out of direct sun for extended periods, and cars should never be left with children or animals inside during high heat days.

As the weekend approaches, residents are encouraged to prepare for a stretch of true summer weather after an unusually comfortable start to the week, along with the possibility of severe storms rolling through the area.
